Japan Wrestling Federation has named star studded squad for the Asian Wrestling Championships in Delhi. All the top wrestlers of Japan who have already qualified for the Olympics or have won world championship medals have been included in the squad. are included in the squad. The Japan team will have in their ranks, 2019 World Champion Risako Kawai in 55kg, World number 2 in 53kg Mayu Mukaida, 62kg World bronze medallist Yukako Kawai, World No.2 Hiroe Minagawa in 76kg women, World Champion in 60kg Greco-Roman Kenichiro Fumita and 2018 World Champ Takuto Otoguro.
All of these players have already qualified for the Tokyo 2020 and will be seen in action in Delhi. Japan has already booked 8 quota places for the Olympics which is highest by any Asian country. 6 out of those 8 players will be present in Delhi for the Asian Championships. The results of this tournament will not affect the Olympic quota but the rankings of the players at Olympics will be determined by this event. It is a ranking competition of the World Wrestling Federation (UWW) and involves the seeding rights of the Olympics.
Japan will arrive in India in 3 batches. Greco-Roman squad will be the first to arrive in India on 15th Feb, followed by the women squad on 17th and Men’s Freestyle squad on 19th of February. Japan won 17 medals in the last Asian Championships including 4 gold and with so many starts in their squad they will be on a mission to improve their tally further.
