Conor McGregor is one of the biggest names in the world of professional combat sports. He became the first MMA fighter to hold belts in two weight categories at the same time. Then in June, he took everyone by shock when the Irish fighter announced retirement. Since then, he has been giving hints of his future plans. In a recent tweet, the Notorious McGregor has dropped hint about his possible participation at Tokyo Olympics.
The Irish fighter wrote, “One year from today the Tokyo Olympics will see competition in sports I know well: judo, wrestling, karate, taekwondo and boxing. This happens if we are past this virus by then, we all must do our part!”
To excel in the octagon, a mixed-martial artist should be well-versed in many disciplines. Out of the mentioned in his tweet, McGregor is known for his punches and grapples. But where he lacked was wrestling which caused him the bout against lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov.
Can we see him competing in boxing?
Yes, it is true, he lost his lone boxing match against the legendary Floyd Mayweather. But the fact he lasted for more than a five rounds is enough to prove that with proper training he can excel in the sport.
And no one doubts his boxing as he secured some of the most insane knockouts in the UFC whilst punching his opponent.
If he decided to take up this discipline, he would have to sign a five-year contract with the International Boxing Association (AIBA) and fight a few times before 2021 Tokyo Games.
