Five Cuban athletes, including the Rio 2016 Olympic champion and Ismael Borrero, the world wrestling champion, have tested positive for the coronavirus.
Borrero won the 2019 world championships and is currently ranked number 1 wrestler in the world in 67kg Greco-Roman category. The news was confirmed by the island’s National Sports Institute (Inder) of Cuba.
Borrero, 28, is one of the 16 cases confirmed today by the Cuban Ministry of Public Health in the daily report on the situation of SARS-CoV-2. The Greco-Roman wrestler had participated this month in the Pan American lathe in Ottawa, Canada, where he was crowned number 1 in the 67 kg division. After his return to Havana on March 17 he began to show symptoms of the infection and on March 28 during an investigation he was identified as a suspicious case, for which he was hospitalized.
25 other athletes, coaches who came in contact with the champion are under epidemiological surveillance, among whom are the Lianna de la Caridad, Ángel Pacheco, Daniel Gregorich and Luis Alberto Orta.
The other positive diagnoses of the coronavirus are a judo referee, a teacher at the Varadero spa rowing school and a physical therapist at the Institute of Sports Medicine.Among the five confirmed is the island’s first infected athlete, volleyball player Javier Jiménez, who is hired by the Estonian Professional League -where he was infected during a match against a team from Italy- and there he spent the period of the the disease was asymptomatic and he was discharged medically.
