The fight for the place in the Indian Wrestling team for the Asian Olympic Qualifiers could not be tougher than what we will witness on Friday in the 74kg Freestyle weight category. Gaurav Baliyan the national champion in 74kg will now have to battle it out with 2 more gold winners of other weight categories. 79kg national champion Sandeep Maan and 70kg winner Naveen both have decided to make a shift to the 74kg making the category nothing less than Group of Death.
In an interview to WrestlingTV, Sandeep confirmed the shift. “Yes I am moving to 74kg. Everyone dreams of playing in Olympics and 79kg being a non-olympic category, I decided to make a move to 74kg. I will try to give my best”.

74kg Category – Group of Death
The category of 74kg was already hyped up as it was expected that double Olympic gold medallist Sushil Kumar will be seen in action at the trials. WrestlingTV had already reported that Sushil is likely to skip the trials. But that notwithstanding, the weight still have multiple challengers. The quality of field in the weight is absolutely top class. Just sample this –
Gaurav Baliyan – Current National Champion in 74kg
Praveen Rana – National Runners up in 74kg
Jitender – National Runners up in 79kg & Member of Indian team for the 2019 World Championships
Sandeep Maan – National Champion 79kg
Naveen – National Champion 70kg
Vishal – Silver medal 70kg
Vinod Kumar – U23 World Medallist 2018
Trials for Men’s Freestyle & Greco-Roman team will be conducted at K.D. Jadhav Wrestling Indoor Stadium in New Delhi. In the first leg of selection trials the entire focus will be on the Olympic Categories fo Senior Free Style & Greco Roman Style Wrestling. The second leg of the trials will be conducted for the Non-Olympic Categories in the second week of January. Only 65kg category in which Bajrang Punia participates and has qualified for the Tokyo 2020 has been exempted from the trials.
First LEG of Trials on 3rd January in Delhi
FS: 74, 97 & 125 Kg.
GR: 60, 67, 77, 87, 97 & 130 Kg.
Selection for –
1st Ranking Series International Tournament “Matteo Pellicone” to be held at Rome [Italy] from 15th to 18th January 2020 and Asia OG Qualifier to be held Xi’an [China] from 27th to 30th March 2020
2020 Senior Asian Championship to be held at New Delhi from 17th to 23rd February 2020

FS: 57, 74, 86, 97 & 125 Kg.
GR: 60, 67, 77, 87, 97 & 130 Kg.
Second LEG of Trials in 2nd week of January for Non-Olympic categories
The Selection Trial in the following weight categories for selecting the teams for participation in the 2020 Asian Senior Championship will be held in the 2nd week of January 2020:
Free Style 61, 70, 79 & 92 Kg.
Greco Roman Style 55, 63, 72 & 82 Kg.
