The senior world championships silver medallist Deepak Punia became cynosure of all eyes with his fabulous performance in 2019 where along with senior world medal the 18 year old also won the junior world championships. Not only this, he has also become the only Indian wrestler to finish the year 2019 as the number 1 wrestler in the UWW rankings. With such a credentials to back him – Deepak Punia still has someone to challenge him at the National trials to select the team for the Asian Wrestling Championships.
86kg – Deepak Punia vs Pawan Kumar Saroha for the Asian Championship Slot
Former Commonwealth Games medallist Pawan Saroha is husband of Geeta Phogat and he recently won the 86kg gold at the National Wrestling in Jalandhar followed by gold at the South Asian Federation Games. These medal winning performance has given him a right to challenge Deepak Punia for the Asian Championship slot in the 86kg category.

Though the WFI has made quite clear that the result in these trials will not affect Deepak’s place for the Tokyo Olympics as he has already secured the quota place in Nur-Sultan.
Pawan told WrestlingTV from the national training camp in Sonepat, “I have worked very hard and will give my best in the trials. Rest it will be the performance on the day”.

Trials for Men’s Freestyle & Greco-Roman team will be conducted at K.D. Jadhav Wrestling Indoor Stadium in New Delhi. In the first leg of selection trials the entire focus will be on the Olympic Categories fo Senior Free Style & Greco Roman Style Wrestling. The second leg of the trials will be conducted for the Non-Olympic Categories in the second week of January. Only 65kg category in which Bajrang Punia participates and has qualified for the Tokyo 2020 has been exempted from the trials.
First LEG of Trials on 3rd January in Delhi
FS: 74, 97 & 125 Kg.
GR: 60, 67, 77, 87, 97 & 130 Kg.
Selection for –
1st Ranking Series International Tournament “Matteo Pellicone” to be held at Rome [Italy] from 15th to 18th January 2020 and Asia OG Qualifier to be held Xi’an [China] from 27th to 30th March 2020
2020 Senior Asian Championship to be held at New Delhi from 17th to 23rd February 2020
Weight Categories in which trial to be held:
FS: 57, 74, 86, 97 & 125 Kg.
GR: 60, 67, 77, 87, 97 & 130 Kg.
Second LEG of Trials in 2nd week of January for Non-Olympic categories
The Selection Trial in the following weight categories for selecting the teams for participation in the 2020 Asian Senior Championship will be held in the 2nd week of January 2020:
Free Style 61, 70, 79 & 92 Kg.
Greco Roman Style 55, 63, 72 & 82 Kg.
