Due to the revision in the calendar of United World Wrestling in the wake of Coronavirus pandemic, uncertainty looms over World Junior Championships. Originally scheduled to take from September 7 to 13 in Belgrade, Serbia, the Junior Worlds might get postponed after the UWW made changes to its competition schedule.
Mohammad Ebrahim, Iran Wrestling Federation spokesperson said that last week the world governing body had sent a letter stating the World Junior Championships may be postponed.
“Last week we received a letter from the World Wrestling Union stating that the World Youth Championships and the annual congress of the World Wrestling Federation may be postponed. I should add that this is also true for the World Junior Championships.”
“Currently, according to the calendar of the UWW, the Asian Championships in the youth and junior age categories, which were scheduled to be held in June and July of this year in Kyrgyzstan and Thailand, respectively, have been postponed.”
An official announcement is yet to be made by the world governing body.
Earlier, UWW had announced the revised dates for the Olympic Qualifiers. The Asian Qualifiers will be held from March 26 to 29 in Xi’an, China, while the European will be hosted by Hungary from March 19 to 22 in Budapest. The African-Oceania will be organised by Morocco from March 13 to 15, while the World Qualifiers will take place in Sofia, Bulgaria from April 30 to May 3.
The Tokyo Olympic Games have also been rescheduled to July 2021. It will kick off on July 23 while the closing ceremony will be on August 9.
