The President of Japan Wrestling Federation has announced that the women wrestling team of Japan can win gold medals in all 6 categories at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. In an interview to federation’s official platform, Tomiaki Fakuda said, “My goal is to win gold medal in all classes. According to me every girl in the Japan team is capable to deliver the gold. I want to the goal to be high, that’s why I am keeping gold in all categories as my goal”.
With the likes of Kaori Icho and Saori Yoshida in the squad in past, Japanese girls have dominated the world of women wrestling without any match. With Icho and Yoshida now retired, Japan could only muster one gold at the 2019 world championships courtesy Risako Kawai, their lowest ever. But that result notwithstanding the Japanese federation president sounded confident of great show at Tokyo and declared that apart from USA in heavy categories, their is little challenge for Japan girls.
“My worry is 68kg and 76kg. 68 kg world champion Tamira Mensastock has great physical ability. It’s hard to beat her, but there are still rough parts which can be exploited so is the case with Adeline Gray in 76kg”
Tokyo 2020: Japan starts Olympic training camp
Meanwhile the Japanese Olympic hopefuls have already started their Olympic and New Year training camp at the Ajinomoto Training Center in Tokyo. Three styles of top Japanese athletes, including six Olympic weight-categories are training together.
