Pooja Dhanda the girl from Gudana, small village in Hissar district had all the chances to accomplish what no other Indian female wrestler had achieved. No Indian female wrestler has ever entered the world championship finals, Dhanda had great chance to reverse the record. But 24 year old from Haryana could not. She lost out in the Semi-Finals of the world-championship to Liubov Ovcharova of Russia in a surprisingly one sided affair.
Russian girl was aggressive from the start of the bout and did not gave any chance to the Russian to recover from the initial onslaught and won the bout on technical superiority in less than 2minutes 30 seconds. Dhanda who won the bronze medal at the last world wrestling championships in Budapest in 2018 will once again take a shot at the bronze medal tomorrow.
Earlier Dhanda showed great character in the quarterfinals where she defeated Yuzuka Inagaki of Japan. Inagaki is the current Asian Champion and 2019 Junior World Champion.
Despite of her semi-finals appearance, Dhanda will have to wait little longer to book the ticket for the Tokyo Olympics 2020. Unlike her team-mate Vinesh Phoghat’s weight category, Dhanda’s weight category is not included in the Olympics. In the trials conducted by the Wrestling Federation of India, Pooja lost out to compatriot Sarita Mor in her favorite 57kg weight category and could not make in the squad.
