Rip TikTok: In a historic decision by the Indian government, as many as 59 Chinese apps, including the popular video-sharing platform TikTok got banned on June 29. The move has received a lot of praise from the Indian wrestling fraternity. 2012 London Olympic medallist Yogeshwar Dutt, who has been calling for the ban for past couple of months, praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He took to Twitter and wrote,”भारत सरकार का Chinese Apps को ban करने का फ़ैसला अभिनंदन योग्य है। स्वाभिमानी होने के लिए आत्मनिर्भर होना ही एकमात्र उपाय है| (The decision taken by the Indian govt. to ban the Chinese apps is worth appreciating. To self-respect we need to become self-reliant). Other wrestlers who have reacted are Bajrang Punia, Divya Kakran, amongst others.

The 59 apps which were banned have been termed as prejudicial to sovereignty, integrity and national security. The Information Technology Ministry in a statement said that it has received many complaints about the misuse of some apps on iOS and Android platforms for “stealing and surreptitiously transmitting users’ data in an unauthorized manner to servers which have locations outside India.”
