Hardeep thrashed by American Tracy Gangelo Hancock in 97 kg opening bout

No one had heard much about 18 year old Ashu before the Indian team trials last week. He surprised everyone as he won the trials by overpowering many establish names to make it to the senior Indian team for the first time in the 67kg category. On the opening day, Ashu proved that wins in the trials were no flash in the pan as he won his opening round against Senior Asian Medallist Mirzobek Rakhmatov after being down 7-0.

The 2017 World Cadet Runner-up was up against experienced Rakhmatov of Uzbekistan. No one gave Indian any chance against the Uzbek especially when his other more established team-mates were falling by way-side. But the Indian champion made a most amazing comeback to score 11 consecutive points to settle the bout in his favor.
