Tough first round victory for Bajrang Punia in 65kg – The Indian champion was drawn to meet Zain Allen Retherford of USA in the last 16 bout. 24 year old Retherford is considered as one of the big hopes of USA wrestling and was expected to give Bajrang run for his money and that is what happened in the first round. Retherford with his aggressive style did not gave Bajrang any chance to attack in the round 1. In the round 2, 2018 Asian Game gold medallist Punia made a comeback in the see-saw battle and eventually triumphed in last 15 seconds to win 5-4.
Deepak Punia shocked in the first round – Indian wrestling’s big hope and 2019 world silver medallist Deepak Punia has shockingly lost in the opening round of the 86kg category. Punia was completely off-color as he was defeated by 2018 Pan American Games runner up Ethan Adrian Ramos of Portugal in completely one sided encounter. The Portuguese wrestler won the bout 13-1. Deepak looked in some discomfort during the bout and was not in his elements.
