Wrestling News: Had it not been for the ongoing pandemic, Olympic medallist Sakshi Malik would be amongst the happiest with news about the resumption of competitions from September. But as Covid-19 fear grips the wrestler, she is confused about her participation in the upcoming events or not. “I do not know. I am ready for the competitions but with the rise in cases it is scary,” she says.
UWW on Saturday officially announced that the senior world championships has been scheduled for December in Serbia. Sakshi opines that with the cases rising in India and abroad it will be tough to decide what to do. “Firstly, this corona, it is still out of control. Secondly, if the world championships is being held then all the leading nations will participate. Then we are also ready, however, with the cases rising in India and outside it, it is very confusing to decide,” leaving the final decision of her participation with the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI). “I am confused and ready at the same time,” the Asian medallist added.
Guidelines for conducting the world championships
As per UWW guidelines, the competition will include eight to 10 teams and a minimum of 70% participating countries (based on prior year’s athlete attendance). To be valid, the conditions and criteria for the competition must be confirmed by UWW and local organizers two months before the start of the competition.
