Tokyo Olympics: The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) is planning a month-long training camp for Ravi Dahiya (57kg) and Deepak Punia (86kg) in Russia after the ongoing Poland Open Ranking Series. “We are trying to get the visas for Russia for them. Once the process is done they will head directly to Russia,” Vinod Tomar told WrestlingTV.
Ravi and Deepak will join fellow Tokyo Olympic-bound wrestler Bajrang Punia (65kg) who skipped the ranking series to train in Vladikavkaz, Russia.
Meanwhile, the women wrestlers, Anshu Malik (57kg) and Vinesh Phogat (53kg) will stay in Poland until June 18. They will then move back to Hungary where they will train until June 30. From July 1 to 10, the duo will be part of an international camp in Tallin, Estonia. However, the Estonia camp is subject to visa clearance. “After Poland, the women wrestlers may train in Hungary and then in Estonia,” Tomar added.
Anshu Malik suspected for Covid-19
Anshu Malik withdrew from the Poland Open on Friday after catching a fever and will be in isolation as a precautionary measure till she gets her COVID-19 test report. It has been learnt that she was running a temperature when she reported for weigh-in for the 57kg category on Friday morning and it was suggested that she withdraw from the competition.
“Anshu did not want to miss the competition but as a precautionary measure she has been isolated and has given a sample to confirm if she is infected with coronavirus or not,” Tomar said.
“It does not look like COVID-19 since she has been in good shape since landing in Warsaw. But such are the times that you can’t risk, so she is being tested,” Tomar added.
Anshu’s parents had contracted virus last month and till the time they recovered, she and her younger brother had stayed in a hotel in Rohtak. She had come back home only after they recovered.
Anshu, 19, had qualified for the Tokyo Games through the Asian Olympic Qualifier, held in Almaty in April this year.
