Indian wrestler Anshu Malik bows out of Tokyo 2020 after losing to Russian Olympic Committee’s Valeria Koblova in the Women’s freestyle 57 kg repechage here at Makuhari Messe Hall A Mat B on Thursday.

Tokyo Olympics Wrestling LIVE: Russian Olympic Committee’s Valeria Koblova defeated Indian by 5-1. Participating at her maiden Games, Anshu fought bravely but couldn’t stand a chance against the seasoned pro. Celebrating her 20th birthday, Anshu started the match on the front foot but the Rio 2016 silver medalist held her defence as she took a narrow 1-0 lead going into the second half of the bout.
Valeria Koblova got her second ‘shot clock’ in the second half which saw Malik opening the scoring in the match. In the last 30 seconds of the match, Koblova turned the match into its head as she captured 4 points and progressed into the bronze medal bout.
The Russian will now face Bulgaria’s Evelina Georgieva Nikolova in the bronze medal match.
Tokyo Olympics Wrestling LIVE: Earlier on Wednesday, Anshu lost to Belarus’ Iryna Kurachkina in the 1/8 Final event. Iryna defeated Anshu 8-2 to advance in the quarter-finals and later into the final which gave the Indian the chance for repechage.,

As per Olympics.com, repechage allows a wrestler who was beaten by an eventual finalist another chance at an Olympic medal.
In her previous match, Anshu Malik lost 2-8 to Iryna Kurachkina of Belarus in the women’s freestyle 57kg 1/8 Final event at Tokyo Olympics. Participating at her maiden Games, Anshu fought bravely but couldn’t stand a chance against the seasoned pro. Starting the second half, the 19-year-old Anshu gave some spirited fightback to Kurachkina by throwing her out of the mat as she registered her first two points at the Games.
Valeria Koblova has previously won a Silver medal in the 2016 Rio Olympics. She has also won Silver medals at World Championships 2014 and Wrestling World Cup 2015 and a Gold at European Championships U23. On the other hand, Anshu Malik is chasing her maiden Olympic medal. She has won Gold and Bronze at Asian Championships 2021 and 2020 respectively and Silver at individual World Cup 2020. Now, Anshu Malik will be eyeing a Bronze medal at the Tokyo Games.
The duo had last faced each other at Rio Games. Anshu Malik had suffered a 2-9 defeat at the hands of Russia’s Valeria Koblova in the quarter-finals of the Women’s freestyle 58kg event in the Rio Olympics. Can she avenge her defeat?
NOTE: Anshu Malik had sealed her place at Tokyo 2020 through the Asian Olympic qualifiers in April.
