The sport of wrestling is very popular in Turkey and is considered as the national sport of Turkey un-officially. The Turkish wrestling federation has compiled and released data of Turkish medal winners in last 96 years from 1923 to 2019. According to the report, Turkish wrestlers have won 470 Gold, 497 Silver and 729 Bronze medals in the European, world and Olympic championships since 1923. The report further elaborates that the total number of medals won in these tournaments is 1696 and no other sport comes closer to these kind of exploits in the global arena.
In 2019 – Turkey won 87 MEDALS
The National Wrestlers of Turkey won a total of 87 medals in 2019 itself according to the report which includes 16 Gold, 21 Silver and 50 Bronze.
According to the official spokesperson of Turkish Wrestling, “Our Wrestlers have won unprecedented number of medals at every global event. In the senior European championship in Romania itself we won 16 medals and broke another record. With the support of our Turkish Wrestling federation, Government, Ministry of Sports, it aims to continue these successes in the coming years”.
