U.S. wrestlers wins 6 Greco-Roman medals in the Veteran world wrestling championships

The United States came home with six medals in Greco-Roman on Wednesday at the Veterans World Championships, two silver medals and four bronze medals. These are the first medals won by the USA at this year’s Veterans Worlds. Competition today was in Div. C and Div. D.

Claiming silver medals for the United States were George Porter of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. at 130 kg in Div. C and Joseph Raia of South Elgin, Ill. at 62 kg in Div. C.

Porter was edged in the gold-medal finals by Bahaaldin Karimzadeh of Iran, 4-3. Karimzadeh and Porter traded stepouts for a 1-1 tie in the first period, with Porter’s point coming after a U.S. challenge. Karimzadeh added a takedown to lead 3-1 at the break. Karimzadeh added a stepout point early in the second to lead 4-1. Porter scored a late takedown to cut the lead to 4-3 but was unable to score again as time ran out.

Porter won four total matches, claiming three in his round-robin pool, and then winning in a cross-bracketed semifinals. His pool victories were over Adil Karibov of Kazakhstan, Ferenc Nedbalek of Hungary and Thomas Summ of Germany. To reach the finals, he edged Mukerrem Yenici of Turkey, 8-6

Porter has won two Veterans freestyle World gold medals, claiming his titles in 2016 and 2017.

Raia was defeated in the gold-medal finals by Winfried Hoeflich of Germany in an 8-0 technical fall. Hoeflich scored a takedown, then hit three straight gut wrenches to end the match.

Raia won two matches to reach the finals. He won an exciting 4-3 semifinal match over former Veterans World champion Malkhaz Gogoladze of Georgia, 4-3 in front of Gogaladze’s home crowd. In the quarterfinals, Raia scored an impressive 8-0 technical fall over Istvan Kleber of Hungary.Capturing bronze medals for Team USA on Wednesday were Robinson Prebish of Richmond, Va. (Div. C at 62 kg), Michael Madry of St. Petersburg, Fla. (Div. D at 62 kg), Erik Hinckley of Lansing, Kansas (Div. D at 100 kg) and Matthew Nowak of Johannesburg, Mich. (Div. D at 130 kg).

Prebish was defeated in his opening match by finalist Thomas Berger of Germany. He rallied in his bronze-medal bout, an 8-0 technical fall victory over Ali Ayupov of Kazakhstan.

Madry opened with a 12-2 technical fall over Gocha Mosiashvili of Georgia, then was egded in the semifinals by Frederic Paul of France, 3-1. He won his bronze-medal bout over Gocha Targamadze of Georgia by forfeit.

Hinckley placed second in his pool, after losing to Jahangir Moghaddam Nejad of Iran, 4-0, and getting a 12-4 technical fall win over Valeri Mamardashvili of Georgia. In the semifinals, he fell to Aleksandr Kokurin of Russia. Hinckley won his bronze-medal bout by fall over George Otiashvili of Georgia in 1:07.

Nowak was third in a three-athlete round-robin, dropping both of his matches. In his second match, he fell by technical fall to Olympic champion Andrzej Wronski of Poland.

Reaching a bronze-medal match and placing fifth was Jeff Anderson of Zeeland, Mich. in Div. D at 88 kg.

Three U.S. athletes will compete in the Greco-Roman Div. A competition on Thursday, Jordin Humphrey of Monrovia, Calif. at 70 kg, Milton Yates of Washington, D.C. at 78 kg and James Medeiros of Van Nuys, Calif. at 88 kg. Humphrey won a Veterans World bronze medal last year in freestyle. Their first round draws are listed below.
