Indian wrestling has got a new star as Pooja Gehlot entered the finals of U23 world wrestling championships in Budapest. Gehlot gave brave performance to outdid YETGIL Zeynep of Turkey in the 53kg semi-finals, hence ensuring another sure-shot medal for India at the ongoing championships.
22 year old Pooja used her leg attacks to out maneuver the Turkish girl in the Round 1 which ended in 2-0 in favor of Pooja. At the start of Round 2 Indian was given a scare as the Turk comeback to lead 4-2 at one point of time. Pooja regained her composure and grip on the bout to finally nail the bout with 8-4 scoreline.
Pooja will now battle out with one of the greats of Japan wrestling Haruna Okuno. Okuno is currently the only wrestler in the world to win world championship title at every age and senior level.
Pooja is only the second Indian girl ever to make it to the finals of U23 World Wrestling Championship championships. Before her Ritu Phogat won silver medal for India in the 2017 U23 World Championships in Poland.
Earlier 2017 Asian Junior champion Gehlot defeated Meng Hsuan HSIEH of Chinese Taipei to make it to the semi-finals of the U23 World Wrestling Championships. Gehlot completely dominated the bout and won 8-0 against the Chinese Taipei wrestler.
In the earlier round, 22 year old Pooja was up against tough opponent in form of Ekaterina Verbina of Russia. Verbina who is the current junior world silver medallist started as favorite but Indian performed brilliantly to outwitt her by 8-3 in the last 30 seconds of the bout to book place in the quarterfinals of the 53kg weight category.
57kg – Pinki loses in Quarterfinals
Like her counterpart Pooja, Pinki also had a great chance to book semi-final berth but the Indian lost out close bout to Hannah Fay TAYLOR of Canada in the last 8 match up. Earlier Pinky started on a bright note on day 4 of the world championships. Pinki comfortably defeated American Arian Carpio to enter last 8.
65kg – Qualification – Nisha (India) vs Nelson M (USA)
India’s Nisha was no match for Maya Nelson of USA in the 65kg category. Nelson who has 2017 Junior world championship title to her credit won 11-3 against the lanky Indian. Nisha tried her best but mistakes and weak defense led to her downfall.
72kg – Qualification – Naina Kanwal (India) vs Marin Potril (Cuba)
India’s big hope & 2019 Asian U23 Champion Naina Kanwal disappointed for India.
23 year old Kanwal was no match for 2019 Junior World Champion Marin Potril of Cuba. Potril who also has Youth Olympic Games title to her credit won 13-3 against the Indian. Naina now can only hope that the Cuban can enter finals and she gets to compete in the repechage round.
