The wonders of Pooja Gehlot at the U23 World Wrestling came to halt on Friday night at Budapest. The battle of gold between Pooja from India and one of the most decorated wrestler of Japan Haruna Okuno could not justify its hype. The 5 time world champion Okuno pinned Pooja down with in 72 seconds to win her 6th world championship gold.

Indian girl came into bout with lot of hopes started well when she got hold of the leg of Okuno and picked her up on her shoulders. The same move which gave her victory yesterday against the Zeynep of Turkey undid her this time, as agile and cunning Okuno turned the tables by pinning Pooja down and register easy victory.

The experience of Okuno prevailed as Pooja stood stunned.

Pooja is only the second Indian girl ever to make it to the finals and win silver medal in the U23 World Wrestling championships. Before her Ritu Phogat won silver medal for India in the 2017 edition in Poland.

On the day 4 of the competition Pooja defeated YETGIL Zeynep of Turkey in the 53kg semi-finals. In the earlier rounds she got better of experienced

Ekaterina Verbina of Russia, the current junior world silver medallist & Meng Hsuan HSIEH of Chinese Taipei . The 2017 Asian Junior champion Pooja best impressed everyone with her temperament, strength and staying power during the U23 World Championships.

The result of final notwithstanding, it is safe to say that Indian wrestling has got a new star in Pooja Gehlot.

India’s medal record at the U23 World Wrestling

2019 – India in this edition of the world championships has won 2 silver medals up till now, courtesy Ravinder in 61kg Men’s freestyle and Pooja Gehlot in 55kg women freestyle. Other than this in Greco-Roman wrestling, Sajan will fight for Bronze in 77kg on Saturday and Arjun also stands a chance for medal as he has qualified for the repechage round in the 55kg category

2018 – Unlike 2017, in the second edition in Bucharest, Romania Indian wrestlers could only muster one Silver medal courtesy Ravi Dhaiya in the 57kg.

2017 – The first edition of the UWW U23 World Wrestling Championships was held in Poland. Indian wrestlers won 3 silver medals in the inaugural edition. Bajrang Punia won Silver in 65kg, Vinod Kumar won Silver medal in 70kg freestyle category. Ritu Phogat became one and only women for India ever to win U23 World Championship medal by entering the finals of 48kg category where she lost to Even Demirhan of Turkey.
