Deepak PUNIA has been named United World Wrestling’s Junior Freestyle Wrestler of the Year. Punia ended an 18 year drought and became the first Indian wrestler to win a junior world title since 2001.
18 year old Deepak Punia became the first Indian wrestler to win gold at the Junior World Championships in Estonia. If that wasn’t enough Punia wrestled powerfully to become the only Indian wrestler in 2019 to enter the finals of the senior world wrestling championships. He could not play the final against Hassan Yazdani of Iran because of injury but qualified for Tokyo 2020 in 86kg category.
Punia is currently ranked number 1 in the UWW rankings of 86kg category and will be India’s big hope at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Earlier Punia has also won the Cadet World Championships gold in 2016.
Japan’s Yui SUSAKI has been named United World Wrestling’s Junior Women’s Wrestler of the Year. Susaki outscored her five #WrestleTallinn opponents 46-0 en route to her second consecutive junior world title.
