The UWW U23 World Championship is about to start on Monday in Budapest, Hungary. The best wrestlers from all over the world including the 30 member Indian team have already reached Budapest. More than 60 teams & 600 best Under 23 wrestlers will be seen in action from all around the globe in Hungary.

The championship will be underway with Men’s freestyle competition on the first two days followed by Women wrestling & Greco Roman category.

India is fielding 30 member team for the world championship, 10 in each category. India which could muster only 1 Silver medal in the last edition of the U23 World Wrestling Championships will hope for much better show this time.

India’s record at the U23 World Wrestling – Past 2 editions

2017 – The first edition of the UWW U23 World Wrestling Championships was held in Poland. Indian wrestlers won 3 silver medals in the inaugural edition. Bajrang Punia won Silver in 65kg, Vinod Kumar won Silver medal in 70kg freestyle category. Ritu Phogat became one and only women for India ever to win U23 World Championship medal by entering the finals of 48kg category where she lost to Even Demirhan of Turkey.

2018 – Unlike 2017, in the second edition in Bucharest, Romania Indian wrestlers could only muster one Silver medal courtesy Ravi Dhaiya in the 57kg.

The favorites in the U23 World Wrestling Championships

Both the editions of the world championship surprisingly has thrown the same countries dominating the men / women freestyle & Greco-Roman categories. In 2017 (Poland) & in 2018 (Romania) – Freestyle Men category is dominated by Russia, Women by Japan and Greco-Roman category by wrestlers from Georgia on both occasions.

Collectively for both the editions, Japan has won the maximum number of Gold medals at 17. Russia has most U23 World Championship medals to their credit with 29 podium finishes.
