Saturday, the day 8 of the UWW World wrestling championships is proving to be a great day for Indians at Nur-Sultan. India who has already won 2 bronze medals in the world championship’s Men’s Freestyle competition has chance to add another two medals to the kitty. Deepak Punia is 86kg weight category and Rahul Aware in the 61kg weight category has entered semi-finals of the event.

86kg FS – Deepak Punia in Semi-Finals, books Tokyo 2020 Olympics ticket

The young 19 year old sensation Deepak Punia who recently created history by winning the Junior World championships title created history once again, this time by becoming youngest to qualify for Tokyo Olympics 2020. Punia was in his true elements as he first dashed hopes of Adult Davlumbayev, the local wrestler from Kazakhstan and then easily got pass Bakhodur Kodirov of Tajikistan to enter quarterfinals.

In the quarter-finals Punia showed brilliant composure to beat Carlos MENDEZ of Colombia in the dying seconds to book Tokyo 2020 Olympics ticket and shot at world championship medal.

61kg – Rahul Aware in semi-finals in the non-olympic category

Rahul Aware justified his seeding of number 2 in the 61kg weight category by entering semi-finals of the world championships. The category of 61kg is non-olympic category but nevertheless Aware’s semi-final entry will give India another chance to take a shot at the world championship medal.

Aware who is know for his swift movement used the same to his advantage in his close 10-7 victory over Rassul Kaliyev of Kazakhstan to book a semi-final berth.

Aware will meet 2016 world championship silver medallist Beka Lomtadze in the semi-finals.
