Indian Freestyle Men & Women given Warm-Send off by team’s sponsor TATA MOTORS
After a long 10-month wait, wrestling is all set to return. The Indian contingent of wrestlers, was accorded a warm send-off for the Individual World Cup by the principal sponsors of the Wrestling Federation of India, Tata Motors, wishing the grapplers ‘Safe Trucking, Safe Wrestling’ here today.
The principle sponsors keeping their ethos intact, made the evening more vibrant and powerful as the send-off had all the ingredients to their slogan for the event which begins from December 12 in Serbia.
Speaking on the occasion, Brij Bhushan Singh, President of WFI said: “Wrestling has always given us a good number of medal at the Olympics. With this tournament we have taken a step towards getting back to normal. I believe we will get 3-4 medals this time. Tata Motors have been very supportive in our preparations. I congratulate them for it”.
It will be the first tournament since the lockdown in March due to COVID-19, and wrestling is the first sport from India which will be taking part in an international tournament.
Understandably, all eyes will be on Narsingh Yadav, who is making a comeback to wrestling in 74kg men’s freestyle, after a four-year ban.
The 2015 world medallist said: “It feels good to be back. WFI has been very supportive in making my comeback possible. I have been training hard for this day and that now it is here, my aim is to get a medal for my country”.
Talking on the support the wrestlers have received, all the participants agreed that it has come as a morale booster.
The World Cup will be a good opportunity for Tokyo Olympic bound wrestlers Ravi Dahiya (57kg) and Deepak Punia (86kg) to test their mettle. Dahiya said: “We all have been waiting for wrestling to return. Everybody has trained hard and are excited for the World Cup”.
The World Cup will be a good exposure for young guns like Anshu and Sonam. When asked about the public expectations and pressure, Anshu, who won bronze at the Asian Championship in 57kg said: “There is no pressure. We are just focusing on performing and let’s hope it goes well”.
