Vinesh Phogat starts year 2020 with a bang, wins gold medal at Rome Ranking Series

The wrestling queen of India Vinesh Phogat has won gold medal at the 2020 season’s first Ranking Series event in Rome. The final between Vinesh and Luisa Elizabeth Valverde of Equador was completely one sided affair as Ecuadorian wrestler never looked posing any threat to Vinesh. The champion from India won the bout 4-0 and secured India’s 2nd gold medal at the ongoing championships. 
Earlier in the semi-finals India’s best bet for Tokyo 2020 was at her best as she defeated two time world medallist Qiyanu Pang of China 4-2. Pang like Vinesh is a bronze medal winner in the 2019 world championships in Nur-Sultan. In the last 8 match, 2018 Asian Games gold medallist Vinesh defeated the Under 23 World Champion Lannuan Lu of China to make it to the last 4 of the Rome Ranking Series. Phogat has been training in Kiev, Ukraine since past few weeks and looked supremely fit and agile as she scored 2 four pointers to outfox her young Chinese opponent. Vinesh won the bout 15-5.
The gold medal winning performance of Vinesh has taken India’s medal tally in Rome to 5. India has up till now won 2 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze medal at the UWW Ranking Series event in Rome.

Quarters – Vinesh Phogat beat Lannuan Luo (China) 15-5
Last 4      –  Vinesh Phogat  beat Qiyanu Pang (China) 4-2
Finals     –   Vinesh Phogat  beat Luisa Elizabeth Valverde (Equador) 4-0
Nirmala Devi loses bronze medal bout in 50kg
In the 50kg category for women, India’s Nirmala Devi made an impressive comeback to the Indian team but lost out on the bronze medal. The 35 year old from Haryana was up against Victoria Lacey ANTHONY of USA in the bronze medal bout. Despite of trying her best Nirmala lost the bout to stocky American by 1-4. 
 
Earlier Nirmala reached Semi-finals of the 50kg category after defeating Veronika Gurskaya of Russia 9-6. In the semi-finals veteran from India lost to former world number 1 Sarah Ann Hilderbrandt of USA. 
 
 
Satyawart Kadian loses in quarterfinals
The men’s freestyle competitions also begin today as India’s Satyawart Kadian won his opening 97kg bout but lost out in the quarterfinals to Mchedlidze of Ukraine. The  Asian Championship bronze medal winner Kadian won his opening round against Mamed Ibragimov from Kazakhstan but could not sustain the momentum as he went down to Ukrainian wrestler 0-2. 
 
In the 125kg Sumit Malik was far from impressive as he lost to 2014 Junior World Champion Amarveer Dhesi of Canada 0-5.
