India’s wrestling star Vinesh Phogat pulled out of the world cup due to lack of competition. “Vinesh feels elite wrestlers in her division will skip the meet, so she is not going,” Wrestling Fed3ration of India (WFI) assistant secretary, Vinod Tomar said.
With this four wrestlers in total have pulled out of the competition. Others being Bajrang Punia, Somvir and Jitender. While WFI named Narsingh Yadav, who is making a comeback after a doping ban, as replacement for Jitender in 74kg, other weight classes will go unrepresented.
The tournament Dec. 12-18 in Serbia’s capital city was initially the world championship. With some countries unable or unwilling to attend, it was downgraded to a World Cup.
WFI will be sending the same Asian Championship participants to Belgrade. India have been asked to reach the city by December 10. The event will begin with competitions in the Greco-Roman category followed by women’s wrestling and men’s freestyle. This competition is a substitute for the World Championships, which was scheduled in the same place at the same time before being cancelled due to the pandemic.
