Who is the first Indian to win Gold medal in Asian Wrestling Championships?

The year 2019 was nothing less than phenomenal for the Indian wrestling. Indian wrestlers won medals and accolades at every global stage. Be it seniors or any age group tournaments, be it at continental level or at world level, Indian wrestlers kept registering new milestones. India’s only exclusive LIVE wrestling digital channel WrestlingTV is conducting a poll to celebrate the achievements of the Indian wrestlers. The WrestlingTV poll is being conducted to see who according to the wrestling fans were the best male and female wrestlers from India in year 2019. The fans can cast their votes for their favorite wrestling star by logging into www.WrestlingTV.in. WrestlingTV polling for the best male and female wrestlers will be on till 26th Dec 2019. The winners will be announced on 27th Feb 2019.

Along with the Indian wrestlers, fans can also win by participating in the poll. 5 lucky winners will get official T-SHIRTS of Indian wrestling team. The names of the 5 lucky winners will be announced on 27th Dec 2019.

Nominees for the Best Indian Male Wrestlers are –
1) Bajrang Punia – Punia had a great year in 2019 which started with Asian Championship Gold in February. The Indian champion then went on to win titles at Yasar Dogu and other ranking series events. He was number 1 wrestler in the world in 65kg till the world wrestling championships in Nur-Sultan and the world’s turned out to be heartbreak for Bajrang. Biased referring and weak leg defense costed Bajrang Punia the gold medal at the world championships. He ended up with Bronze and qualification ticket for Tokyo 2020.

2) Ravi Dhaiya – If someone was the most surprising package for the Indian wrestling in year 2019 it has to be Ravi Dhaiya. 23 year old surprised everyone by winning bronze medal at the senior world championships in Nur-Sultan in 57kg category. In the process Dhaiya booked Olympic quota place as well. Dhaiya earlier won the silver medal at 2018 U23 World Championships.

3) Rahul Aware – The Maratha warrior Rahul Aware had a great 2019. He started with bronze at the Asian Championships and ended the year with bronze at 2019 world championships. The only difference was that his Asian Bronze came in 57kg and the world bronze in 61kg which is non-olympic category. Aware with his tenacity, never give up spirit showed the world that Indian wrestlers are second to none.

4) Deepak Punia – He is the youngest in the nominee list for the best Indian male wrestler of 2019 but his exploits in the year made him one of the biggest contender. 18 year old Deepak Punia became the first Indian wrestler to win gold at the Junior World Championships in Estonia. If that wasn’t enough Punia wrestled powerfully to become the only Indian wrestler in 2019 to enter the finals of the senior world wrestling championships. He could not play the final against Hassan Yazdani of Iran because of injury but qualified for Tokyo 2020 in 86kg category
