The sport of wrestling can be India’s biggest medal winner at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. The Wrestling Federation of India’s (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh has claimed that India can win 4 olympic medals at Tokyo 2020. Speaking to the reporters on the sidelines of the Tata Motors National Wrestling Championships WFI President said, “Indian wrestlers are shinning world over. In Tokyo we are targeting 4 medals. We can assure Indian fans that our wrestlers will make India proud.
India already has 4 wrestlers who have qualified for the Olympics 2020 via there performance at the World Wrestling Championships 2019 in Nur-Sultan. When asked, who are the biggest bets for the Olympics medals. WFI President said, “I am very confident that Deepak Punia, Bajrang Punia will win medals for us. Vinesh will also be our big bet in women wrestling (Kushti). I am also hoping Ravi Dhaiya does what he did during the world championships. Not only this I feel India will win 4-5 more quota places and that will further increase our medal chances at Olympics”.
WFI President also thanked Tata Motors contribution in the growth of wrestling during the occasion.
“Our commercial partners and Tata Motors have done wonderfully well for the Indian wrestling (Kushti). Tata’s have always been generous and their support to wrestling (Kushti) is further supporting our endeavors to do well at the global level. Today we can give and provide individual attention, coaching staff to our Olympic probables through the support of TATA Motors. This is helping us excel at the global level”.
India already has 4 wrestlers who have qualified for the Olympics. WFI president is targeting 5 more quota places in the forthcoming Olympic qualifiers. Indian wrestlers will get two more chances to qualify for Olympics. The first one in the Asian Olympic qualifiers in China in March & the second one in World Olympic Qualifiers in Sofia, Bulgaria in April.

Total Quota places for each weight category – 16
World Championships – 2019 (Nur Sultan) — 6 Quota places for each Olympic category
Continental Qualifiers – 2020, March — Total 8 Quota places will be granted, 2 Quotas will be given in each of the 4 continental qualifiers
(Africa & Oceania, PanAmerica, European & Asian Qualifiers)
World OG Qualifier – 2020, April (Bulgaria) – Last 2 quota places will be granted to the top 2 finishers in the world qualifiers
How the rest of Indian wrestlers can qualify for the Tokyo 2020 ??
This means Indian wrestlers still have two chances to qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. The first one in the Asian qualifier round in China (27th 29th March) and the last one in Bulgaria in the world qualifier slated for (30th Apr to 03rd May). In both the tournaments in order to qualify the wrestlers have to finish in the top 2 in their respective weight category to qualify for Tokyo 2020.
