Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) is planning to organise national trials for the world championship in November. United World Wrestling (UWW) on Monday decided to keep the Senior World Championships in Belgrade, Serbia from December 12 to 20. While Tokyo Olympic-bound wrestlers Bajrang Punia (65kg), Ravi Dahiya (57kg), Deepak Punia (86kg), Vinesh Phogat (53kg, women) and Sunil Kumar (87kg, Greco-Roman) will get automatic selection, other there will be selection trials for other weights.

“We will wait till November 6. Once UWW takes a final decision in regard to the championship, then we will seek permission for trials to choose the tea,” a WFI source told WrestlingTV.

However, the deadline for submission of entries is November 5 and therefore it is likely that the federation will send a tentative list of wrestler to ensure participation in the competition.

All eyes on 74kg weight division

Probably the deepest weight category in Indian wrestling circuit presently, everyone will be eager to see who will be WFI’s entry in the 74kg weight category. The middleweight category boasts names like two-time Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar, world champion Narsingh Yadav, and Asian Championship medallists Jitender Kinha and Gaurav Baliyan. While Yadav, Kinha and Baliyan are currently part of the men’s camp in SAI Sonepat, Kumar had sought exemption from the camp and is training at Chhatrasal stadium.
