India’s campaign at the Wrestling World Championships has ended with Rahul Aware winning a bronze medal in the 61 kg category. Second-seeded Aware beat 17th seeded American Tyler Lee Graff 11-4 to ensure he finished on the podium.
This, however, isn’t an Olympic category and thus the bronze doesn’t help Aware qualify for the Tokyo Games.
Not only this – Aware’s Tokyo 2020 Olympic dream is facing a complete dead-end.
RAHUL Aware – Tokyo 2020 Dead end at both ends
Rahul originally a 57kg wrestler which is Olympic category participated in the world championship in the 61kg weight category . Reason, he had put in some extra kilos before the world championship. This paved the way for Ravi Dhaiya to represent India in the Nur-Sultan world championship and rest is history.
Dhaiya grabbed his chance with both hands and performed brilliantly and won a bronze and a ticket for Tokyo 2020.
Rahul Aware who was expecting to cut down the extra kilos after the world championship is left stranded now. Dhaiya’s performance means the category of 57kg is blocked for Rahul Aware
The road to increase the weight and make an attempt at Tokyo Olympic qualification is also blocked. This time by none other than world number 1 Bajrang Punia. Punia has already qualified for Tokyo 2020 in 65 kg weight category.
This clearly means Road to Tokyo 2020 is completely blocked and despite of winning medal at world championships Rahul Aware’s olympic dreams are almost over.

Absolutely horrendous, even Rahul Aware mentioned in an interview held in 2018 after CommonWealth Gold medal winning performance that internal(state) politics makes it hard for him to compete in any big tournaments like what happened in 2014 Asian Games or CommonWealth Games. And it might not be only my opinion but he has far better technique and sound minded as I have seen him win matches from down 0-8, 0-6 in other tournaments. Not to mention five time senior national champ, few Asian championships medals. I wish someone makes a note of it and he gets what he deserves. Have no brawl against Ravi Dahiya but Rahul has experience and have proven in past whenever he gets chance as little as it might be then.

Wrestle off best 2 of 3 goes. Just because 57kg has the spot doesnt mean that India has ton send him if there might be one better.
