Natalya Vorobyova and Alina Berezhnaya have played the women’s 72 kg final at the Nur-Sultan World Championship last year. One of the two will not progress beyond the first round at the ongoing European Wrestling Championships in Rome.
The reigning World Champion Natalya from Russia and the 2013 World Championship gold medallist Alina Berezhnaya from Ukraine are pitted against each other in the 72 kg opening round. The match will be reminiscent of the finals of the Nur-Sultan World Championships 2019 where Natalya had prevailed 4-2 over Alina.
In the 53kg category, all eyes will be on the duel between two-time European Champion Stalvira Orshush and 2012 World Champion Vanessa Kolodinskaya. The game is being termed as a virtual finale. Apart from this, Irina Gusyak of Ukraine, who will be defending her European crown, three-time European champion Maria Prevolaraki of Greece, European Championship 2018 bronze medallist Katarzyna Krawczyk from Poland and Jessica Blake of Netherlands are the other challengers.
Elsewhere, the 2019 World Champion Inna Trazhukova from Russia will compete with the 2017 European Championship silver medallist Mariana Cherdivara from Moldova in the 63kg opening bout. If Inna moves ahead in the first round, she might face the winner of the first round between multiple World Championship medallist Taibe Yuseyn and the 2018 World Championship silver medallist Elif Yesilirmak from Turkey.
The 65kg competition too will have some heavyweights in the form present European Champion Alice Manolova from Azerbaijan, two-time European Champion Petra Olli, 2012 European Champion Henna Johansson and European Games bronze medallist Maria Kuznetsova.
