This is India’s fifth medal at this edition of the World Championships with a total haul of 1 silver and 4 bronze medals. A total of four wrestlers have also booked Olympic quotas through their performances over the last week. Earlier Deepak Punia withdrew from the finals of the 86kg weight category finals due to injured ankle and eye. Punia was the only Indian wrestler in the event who made it to the finals but unfortunately hampered his Gold dreams.
India’s campaign at the Wrestling World Championships has ended with Rahul Aware winning a bronze medal in the 61 kg category.
Second seeded Aware beat 17th seeded American Tyler Lee Graff 11-4 to ensure he finished on the podium. This, however, isn’t an Olympic category and thus the bronze doesn’t help Aware qualify for the Tokyo Games.
Aware, a Commonwealth Games gold medallist, made a thunderous start to his challenge on Friday with an emphatic 13-2 victory over Turkmenistan’s Kerim Hojakov. Against Kazakhstan’s Rassul Kaliyev in the last-eight round, the Indian had to dig deep and relied on his finesse to secure a 10-7 victory. He, however, had lost his semifinal bout 6-10 to Beka Lomtadze of Georgia and thus reached the bronze medal match.
