The Indian wrestling squad has left for Bojnurd, Iran to participate in the 6th edition of World Wrestling Clubs Cup. The squad led by youngster Ravinder (U23 World Medallist) will participate both in the Freestyle and Greco-Roman categories of the team competition.
World Wrestling Clubs Cup is an international wrestling clubs competition among teams representing member nations of the United World Wrestling (UWW), the global governing body for the sport of wrestling.
Other than India, teams from China, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Armenia and Ukraine will participate in the event along with the local Premier League club teams from host Iran. Each Premier League club team from Iran is allowed to recruit 3 foreigners.
Unlike the previous editions, India this time will participate in both freestyle and the greco-roman category in this team competition. Indian freestyle squad includes national champions Gaurav Baliyan (74kg) & Sandeep Singh Mann (79kg). In the greco-roman category prominent names like Arjun Halakurki (55kg), Gurpreet Singh (77kg) have been included in the squad.
It will be the first time that the Indian Greco-Roman team will participate in the World Wrestling Clubs Cup. Indian freestyle squad has been participating in the tournament since last two years and finished at seventh position in 2018 edition of the tournament. Bimeh Razi club of Iran won the World Wrestling Clubs champion trophy in 2018. The club will once again be the favorite as it has biggest of the wrestling names of Iran in their line-up.
The World Wrestling Clubs Cup competition will be played from 17th Dec to 20th Dec and will be streamed LIVE on WrestlingTV.in
