Iran once again proved their domination of the World Wrestling Clubs Cup by winning the freestyle trophy for fifth time. Iran’s champion club Grand Bazaar had world class wrestlers like Haji Aliyev, Reza Atri & Behnam Ehsanpour in their squad and to that kind of firepower, opponent Islamic Azad University (Iran) had no answers. Grand Bazaar easily won the best of 10 tie by 8-2 to lift the trophy. World Wrestling Clubs Cup is an international wrestling clubs competition among teams representing member nations of the United World Wrestling (UWW) the sport’s global governing body.
Indian wrestling team which competed in the event without their full fledged squad both in numbers as well as caliber finished disappointing 8th in the 8 team event. The marquee names of the Indian wrestling decided to skip the event. Not only this, Indian team came to Iran with only 6 wrestlers to compete in the best of 10 tie in this team competition. This resulted in India losing all their group matches and then also the classification tie for 7th place to Kyrgyzstan. India lost the last tie 3-7 to Kyrgyzstan to finish 8th in the competition. For India only Gaurav Baliyan (74kg), Sandeep Maan (79kg) & Abhijeet Katake (125kg) won their bouts.
