World Wrestling Olympic Qualifiers: The focus will now shift to Seema Bisla (50kg), Nisha Dahiya (68kg) and Pooja (76kg) as India hopes for record Olympic qualification in wrestling. After Sumit Malik’s successful campaign in 125kg freestyle, India now has seven confirmed quotas for Tokyo. Two more and it will break its 2016 Rio Games qualification record of eight quotas.
Seema started her campaign with a bang, winning against Anastasiya Yanotava (BLR) 8-0 in the qualification round. The 2021 Asian Championship bronze medallist will now face Youth Olympic Games gold medallist and 2019 Junior European Championship bronze medallist Emma Jonna Denise Malmgren (SWE).
Nisha will begin her campaign against Natalia Iwona Strzalka (POL). The Polish wrestler is the 2019 U23 World Championship bronze medallist. As for the Indian wrestler, she finally bagged her first senior medal at the Asian Olympic Qualifiers last month. Although she failed to make it to the finals, she settled for a bronze.
Pooja, meanwhile, was ousted in the 76kg in the qualification round against Kamile Gaucaite (LTU).
