Wrestling camp shuts as wrestlers return home

Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has suspended both men’s and women’s camp for a week as wrestlers returned home to celebrate Diwali. Divya Kakran, one of the women participants at the Lucknow centre said: “We had asked WFI to allow us to go back and celebrate the festival with our family and they agreed”.

WFI resumed the men’s camp in Sonepat on September 1, while the women’s camp in Lucknow began from October 1 with six Olympic weights in freestyle and women categories. As for Greco-Roman, the camp has been held with three weight categories.

The camp will now resume on November 18. “It is Diwali, so we allowed them to go home. They will now report on Tuesday,” a WFI official told WrestlingTV.

WFI postpones selection trials for World Championships

The national body has postponed the trials for the world in Serbia from December 12 to 20. The decision comes after United World Wrestling (UWW) decided to reschedule its executive meeting from November 6 to 12.

“We have also delayed our decision about the selection of the Indian team for the worlds,” Vinod Tomar, WFI assistant secretary told Hindustan Times. “Trials will be done after UWW take a final call about the event”.

Decision on National Camp this week

WFI will take a call on the senior national championship this week. The national body is planning to conduct the competitions next month. “The federation has proposed to organize Senior National Wrestling Championship in Gonda [Uttar Pradesh]. The Championship may take place from 18th to 20th December 2020,” Vinod Tomar, WFI assistant secretary said.

However, WFI will assess the conditions before making the final call on it. “We are still assessing the conditions. Some planning for the nationals have begun, and we are trying to conduct it next year,” he added.
