Wrestling Federation of India likely to begin national camp in August

Wrestling News- Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) is likely to hold national camp in August. Indian wrestlers will join training after following testing and quarantine protocols. The Sports Authority India (SAI) has been in touch with wrestlers for some time now, through the de-recognised WFI, regarding the possibility of resuming camp which was called off in mid-March due to covid-19.

“They were earlier planned to start this month but the wrestlers are understandably concerned. Most of them are training at home only and have proper safety measures in place. Also, there will be a limited number of personnel and the wrestlers are not sure if it would make sense to be in the camp without sufficient training partners,” a senior WFI official told Sportstar.

“But now we have spoken to them again and most have said let this month get over and things can begin from August. A final decision by SAI may be taken by next week but we expect the camps to begin by the first week,” he added.

The men’s camp for Freestyle and Greco-Roman will be held in Sonepat as for the women’s team the camp will be conducted in Lucknow. The camp will only be held for the Olympic weight categories.

Olympic schedule finalised

The wrestling competition schedule for the Tokyo Olympic Games has been finalized. Wrestling will be contested on the final seven days of the Tokyo Olympics, Aug. 1-8, and held at Makhuari Messe Hall A. Women’s wrestling will be spread across the seven days of the wrestling competition. Greco-Roman will take place Aug. 1-4, while freestyle is scheduled for Aug. 4-7.

Host nation Japan will look to continue its dominance in women’s wrestling. The Japanese women have claimed 11 of 18 Olympic gold medals since 2004, the first year the sport was introduced at the Olympics.
