The World number 1 Greco-Roman wrestler Ismael Borrero’s fans can breather little easy. The news is that the 2016 Olympic champion from Cuba is gradually recovering from bout of Coronavirus but still remains hospitalized. According to the Spokesperson of the Cuban Sports Institute, the 2019 World Champion has started showing some improvement but will have to be under observation for couple of more days.
Speaking to one of the prominent web news portal in Cuba, the official media of the Cuban Sports Institute, the director said that the 2016 Olympic Champion is on recovery path after contracting the Covid-19. The official further elaborated that the Cuban champion is being continuously monitored by top doctors of the institute and they are confident that it is just matter of time that Borrero will recover fully from the deadly Coronavirus.
It is being speculated that Borrero got infected during his participation in the Pan-American championships where 27 member Cuban delegation (including athletes, coaches, managers, doctors, referees and physical therapists) participated in mid-March, but only Borrero tested positive for the disease. All the other members of the national teams are in their homes, fulfilling the isolation and the tasks assigned by their coaches, Portilla the head of Cuban Sports Institute declared.
Post the Pan American championships, Cuban wrestlers also participated In Ottawa in the Pan-American Olympic qualifiers. Cuba obtained 10 Olympic quota places in Ottawa and now they do have 12 Olympic places already secured for Tokyo Olympics in 2021. Although the Tokyo Olympics went from 2020 to 2021 due to the new coronavirus pandemic, all classified athletes retain that status.
