The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) and wrestlers are confused over the fate of the Poland Open. The United World Wrestling (UWW) tournament scheduled to take place next month is likely to get cancelled due to the pandemic.
WFI had sent the participation of Tokyo Olympic-bound Ravi Dahiya (57kg) and Deepak Punia (86kg) for the tournament. Dahiya believed that it would a good testing ground for them ahead of the senior worlds in December. However, due to the second wave of covid-19 in Europe, the event will possibly get cancelled. “No UWW events will happen as the situation is getting worse in Europe,” a UWW official close to the development told WrestlingTV. “No Poland Open this year,” he added.
Meanwhile, WFI claims that they have received the rules and regulations from the organisers on Monday. “We have no information regarding the cancellation of the event. We received a mail from the organisers of Poland Open yesterday (Monday) about the rules and regulations,” a WFI official said.
Both the wrestlers have already applied for the visas to the Poland embassy and are now waiting to get the approval from it.
Doubts over world championship too
With the next month competitions likely to get cancelled, there are doubts over the world championships too. The senior worlds is scheduled to be held from December 12 to 20 in Belgrade, Serbia.
When asked about the future of world championship, the official said it is difficult to comment on it for now. “We don’t know yet. For now it is difficult to say anything”.
UWW’s executive committee will meet on November 6 to assess the situation and take a final call on the fate of the world championship
