United World Wrestling (UWW) on Monday announced the revised dates for the Olympic Qualifiers. The world governing body in a letter to all the federations said that the qualification tournaments shall be organised in 2021 in the same period and venue as in 2020. The dates of all the pending Olympic qualifiers events worldwide has also been announced. In another important decision the world governing body of the sport decided that no UWW event shall take place till June 30th.
Dates of all the Olympic Qualifier events
The Asian Qualifiers will be held from March 26 to 29 in Xi’an, China, while the European will be hosted by Hungary from March 19 to 22 in Budapest. The African-Oceania will be organised by Morocco from March 13 to 15, while the World Qualifiers will take place in Sofia, Bulgaria from April 30 to May 3.
UWW has also asked all the International federations to allow the participation of athletes who will meet the minimum age requirement in 2021. However, nationality changes will be frozen. It means athletes who intend to apply for a change of nationality in 2021 may not be allowed to participate in the Qualifiers and the Games.
They also cancelled all the championships which were planned to be conducted prior to June 30, 2020. The UWW Championships have been postponed to later dates in consultation with the concerned organizers.
Earlier, the world governing body had announced that the quota places for the Olympics will stay valid for the Tokyo Games which were rescheduled to 2021 in the wake of the COVDI-19 pandemic. India has confirmed four places for the Summer Games, thanks to the performance of Bajrang Punia (65kg), Ravi Dahiya (57kg), Deepak Punia (86kg) and Vinesh Phogat (53kg). They are yet to qualify in the remaining 14 Olympic weight class.
