UWW Releases first Ranking of 2020, take a look at complete list

The year 2020 has not started on a good note for the Indian wrestlers as most of them have dropped down in the world rankings released by United World Wrestling (UWW).

Bajrang Punia slides to number 4th
India’s most celebrated wrestler Bajrang Punia has now fallen to number 4th in the world rankings in the 65kg category. Punia ended the year at number 2 but now is ranked number 4th in the list. In the 65kg, 2019 world champion Rashidov is ranked number 1 wrestler in the world.

Deepak Punia also moves down to number 2
Deepak Punia, the only Indian to finish the year 2019 as number 1 ranked wrestler in the world has also moved down 1 place. 18 year old Indian is now ranked number 2 in the world in the 86kg category headed by world champion Hassan Yazdani of Iran.

Ravi Dhaiya moves up to number 3
Ravi Dhaiya has done well for himself as he moved up 2 places to number 3rd in the world rankings in the 57kg category. The bronze medal winner at the world championship has also qualified for the Tokyo 2020 like Deepak and Bajrang Punia. The 57kg category is headed by 2019 world champion Zavur Uguev of Russia.

Like Deepak & Bajrang – Rahul Aware also dropped 1 place to number 3 in the world rankings in the 61kg category. The biggest jump in the rankings came for Jitendar who from 21st have moved up to number 8th in the world rankings in the 79kg category.

Vinesh Phogat drops down 1 place to number 3
In the women’s section world bronze winner Vinesh Phogat also has dropped down 1 place to be ranked number 3 in the new ranking list. The list is headed by Pak Yong Mi of North Korea who surprised everyone by winning gold at Nur-Sultan world championships in 2019. The finalist of the world championship Mayu Mukaida of Japan is number 2 in the world rankings followed by Vinesh at number 3.

Pooja Dhanda in 59kg is the only other Indian women wrestler ranked in top 10 of the world. Dhanda dropped down to 6th from number 5 in 2019. Seema who was ranked number 3 in the world charts in 2019 in 50kg dropped out of top 10. No Indian Greco-Roman wrestler could find a place in the top 10 of the world rankings.
