Rome Ranking Series Day 3 : Nirmala Devi loses bronze medal bout in 50kg

In the 50kg category for women, India’s Nirmala Devi made an impressive comeback to the Indian team but lost out on the bronze medal. The 35 year old from Haryana was up against Victoria Lacey ANTHONY of USA in the bronze medal bout. Despite of trying her best Nirmala lost the bout to stocky American by 1-4. 
 
Earlier Nirmala reached Semi-finals of the 50kg category after defeating Veronika Gurskaya of Russia 9-6. In the semi-finals veteran from India lost to former world number 1 Sarah Ann Hilderbrandt of USA.
50kg Women – Nirmala Devi’s Performance
Last 16  –  Nirmala Devi beat Valentina Islamova (Kaz) – Opponent Injured
Quarter –  Nirmala Devi beat Veronika Gurskaya (Russia) 9-6
Last 4     –  Nirmala Devi lost to Sarah Ann Hilderbrandt (USA) 2-8  
Bronze Bout – Nirmala Devi lost to Victoria Lacey ANTHONY (USA) 1-4
 
Nirmala will now compete in the Asian Championships (in New Delhi from February 18 to 23). The Wrestling Federation of India has made it clear that the selected wrestlers’ participation in the Olympic qualifier (scheduled in Xian (China) from March 27 to 29) depends on their performance in the preceding events. By making it to the semi-finals of the Rome Ranking series Nirmala should have supported her candidature as India’s choice for 50kg category in the Asian Olympic Qualifiers.
