Ivan Yarygin 2020 : Depth of Russian male wrestlers in full display, all medal winners in the tournament from Russia

By   - 27/01/2020

The Russian men are considered as global wrestling powerhouse and the assertion got further credence with the results of Ivan Yarygin Grand Prix 2020 that concluded in Krasnoyarsk yesterday. Such was the dominance of the Russian wrestlers that leave aside any gold medal, none of the participating wrestler could even enter the finals of any of the 10 men freestyle events.

Russia won all 10 gold medals to showcase the depth of the domestic wrestling. Big stars like David Baev (2019 World Champion in 70kg), Soslan Ramanov (Rio Olympic Champion) suffered defeats at the hands of fellow Russians who are yet to prove there worth in the senior ranks at the global stage.

On the last day of the competitions the most interesting battle was fought for the 74kg gold. Two time world champion in the category Zaurbek Sidakov did not participate in the event but the field was still world class by any standards. The final between 2018 world champion in 70kg Magomedrasul Gazimagomedov and U23 World Champion Razambek Zhamalov was won by the former by 3-1 margin. The depth of the Russian wrestling can further gauged from the fact that the line up in 74kg was laced with 5 world medallists from Russia and the competitions were as tough as it can be.

In the 97kg Vladislav Baytsaev (Russia) Beat Magomedkhan Magomedov (Russia) 7: 5, again all medals including the bronze grabbed by the Russian wrestlers.

Unlike the men competition, women wrestlers from China, Mongolia and Japan challenged the local wrestlers well to win gold medals in some of the categories.
