Asian Wrestling Championships Day 4: Sakshi Malik enters final, to play Naomi Rukie of Japan for gold medal

By   - 21/02/2020

The Rio Olympic Bronze medallist Sakshi Malik has redeemed herself to an extent by making to the finals of the Asian Wrestling Championships in Delhi. Sakshi lost her opening bout to Naomi Ruike of Japan by 1-2 margin but made a good comeback to win the next two to make it to the gold medal round of 65kg category. Though her usual flair and power moves were still missing from her repetiore but still she was good to oust former Asian bronze medallist Nabira ESENBAEVA of Uzbekistan in the semi-finals by 5-4 margin. The Indian champion will now once again be pitted against Japan number 1 and 2019 Asian silver medallist Ruike of Japan in the gold medal bout and will have good chance to avenge her defeat in the morning.

Sakshi who has been off color since last few months which had resulted in her opening round loss in the 2019 world championship in September. Not only this she also lost out her place to 18 year old Sonam Malik in the Olympic category of 62kg after losing out to her in trials conducted by WFI. Subsequently she was also dropped from Sports Authority of India’s (SAI) TOPS scheme for the elite athletes. But nothing withstanding Sakshi has now made it to the finals and has a good chance to prove her detractors wrong.
