By   - 22/02/2020

India could not have expected better show from their male wrestlers as 4 out of 5 entered finals of the Asian Wrestling Championships to create history. Led by Bajrang Punia, 3 others Ravi Dhaiya (57kg), Gaurav Baliyan (79kg) and Satyawart Kadian (97kg) will play for the gold medal in the evening session on the Day 5.
65kg – Bajrang Punia’s power show on display
Punia once again showed that he is cut above the rest in the category at the Asian level as he literally toyed with his opponents to make it to the finals once again. The defending champion the category defeated Amirhossein Azim MAGHSOUDI of Iran by 10-0 margin.
Maghsoudi won the 2019 Junior World Championships but could not match the experience of the Indian champion in the semi-final encounter.
In the finals, the Indian champion will be up against Takuto Otoguro of Japan in a mouthwatering clash. Punia will try to avenge his defeat in the finals of 2018 world championships against Otoguro.
Earlier in the quarterfinals, Bajrang got the better of Abbos Rakhmonov of Uzbekistan by 12-2.
57Kg – Brilliant show by Ravi Dahiya enters finals
In a battle between two medallists of 2019 world championships, India’s Ravi Dahiya prevailed over Nurislam SANAYEV of Kazakhstan to make it to the Gold medal match of the Asian Championships. Dahiya won the battle of champions in a very convincing manner to oust triple world medallist Sanayev by 7-2 margin.

In the finals, Dahiya will meet Hikmatullo VOHIDOV of Tajikistan. Dahiya will start as a favorite against the little know Vohidov.

Earlier in the morning session as well 23-year-old Dahiya showed great skills to first oust 2017 world champion Yuki Takahashi of Japan by 14-5 in the opening round and then defeated Mongolian Tugs BATJARGAL in the quarterfinal bout. The Indian champ won the bout by pinning down his opponent as he was leading 6-3.

79kg – Gourav Baliyan in Finals
Baliyan maintained great composure and showed great skills to enter the finals of the non-Olympic category of 79kg. Baliyan won an absolute thriller of the semi-finals against Shinkichi Okui of Japan. Playing his first Senior Asian Championships Baliyan was down at the starting of the first half by 0-3 but the young Indian maintained his focus and won the bout by 6-5.

Baliyan will play Arsalan BUDAZHAPOV (KGZ) for the Gold Medal in the evening session at 6 PM.

97Kg – Satyawart Kadian won semi-finals in 45 seconds
On the road of redemption, India’s Kadian made it to the finals of the 97kg category. Kadian the Asian 2019 bronze medallist defeated Rustam Iskandari of Tajikistan in mere 45 seconds to make it to the gold medal match for the first time in his career. Kadian will have his task cut out in the finals as he will take on Mojtaba Mohammadshafie GOLEIJ of Iran. Goleij is 2 times Under 23 World champion and was recently announced as UWW U23 Wrestler of the year 2019.

70kg – Naveen, the only one to miss out on gold medal bout; will play for bronze
Despite playing so well throughout the morning session, Naveen missed out on reaching the finals of the 70kg category. He lost out to Amirhossein Ali HOSSEINI of Iran in a closely contested match with a scoreline of 2-3. He will be up against the Kazakh Meirzhan ASHIROV in the bronze medal bout later this evening.

Ashirov is a 2018 Asian Championships bronze medallist and would be looking to seal another bronze when he meets Naveen later this evening.
