India’s star grappler Bajrang Punia has decided to make Turkey his base for next 3 weeks in order to prepare for the 2020 season. The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has approved Punia’s proposal to train in Turkey along with his coach Shako Bentinidis.

WFI officials also confirmed to WrestlingTV that Asian Games 2018 gold medallist Indian will also compete at Yasar Dogu international event from 10th January in Turkey along with fellow wrestler Jitendar. Punia will leave for Turkey on 24th December.

As reported earlier by Wrestling, Punia has been exempted from national trials in the first week of January for Asian Olympic Qualifiers and the Asian Championships in February. WFI will allow the 65 kg star wrestler to participate in the upcoming major competitions, including the Asian Championships, without having to contest a trial.
Post Yasar Dogu, Bajrang is scheduled to play in the Matteo Pellicone tournament in Rome which is the first UWW ranking series event of the year and will be held from Jan25th to 28th.

Currently Punia is training in Sonepat with his new training partner. Punia has recovered from all his injuries and has started training in full flow. In order to prepare himself for the tougher challenges ahead, 2019 Khel Ratna award winner Punia has called on Russia’s Viktor Rassadin to be his sparring partner. Viktor is already in India and has began to spar with the Indian champion.

Punia’s coach Shako Bentinidis told WrestlingTV that Viktor may accompany Bajrang to Turkey “Bajrang needed some strong sparring partner and we zeroed down on Rassadin. We want him to travel to Turkey along with us. If Russian Federation allows, Viktor will travel with us”.
