World Championship silver-medallist wrestler Deepak Punia is back to his village in Rohtak after battling Covid-19. The Olympic-bound wrestler (86kg) was amongst the three who tested positive for the virus on the first day of the ongoing men’s wrestling camp in Sonepat. He was quickly shifted to an SAI empanelled hospital and was advised home isolation after getting discharged. Punia recently gave an update on when he plans to resume his training for the Olympics.

In an Instagram post, he wished everyone a healthy life and wrote: “Hello everyone. Hope you are keeping safe and sound. Will start training soon”.

Men’s Wrestling Camp extended

The ongoing men’s wrestling camp at Sonepat has been extended until December 31. With the camp extended till the end of the year, Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) may increase the strength by including non-Olympic weight categories. However, it will be decided after United World Wrestling (UWW) confirms the dates for the world championships.  Currently, there are approximately 24 Olympic weight category wrestler training in Sonepat.

“It all depends on the UWW executive meeting which will take place on October 5. At the meet, they will decide the fate of the world championship.  If the dates are finalised, then more wrestler is expected to join the ongoing camp,” a source from SAI Sonepat told WrestlingTV. As of now, the senior and junior worlds are scheduled for December in Belgrade, Serbia.
