Mykola KUCHMII of Ukraine created a flutter on the day 1 of European Wrestling Championship in Rome as he shocked Riza KAYAALP of Turkey. The Turkish big man’s quest to win a tenth European title was halted in the last 8 bout. Kuchmii scored five unanswered points against Kayaalp, the four-time world champion, and handed the Turkish wrestler his first loss at the European Championships since 2009.
Kuchimi could not sustain his run in the semi-finals and lost out to two time European bronze medallist Alexuc Ciurariu of Romania in the semi-finals, hence knocking out Kayaalp from European medal contention. Kayaalp needed Kuchmii to win to pull him back into the repechage round.
Ciurariu will square off with Levan ARABULI of Georiga in the 130kg finals. Arabuli annihilated Arvi Martin SAVOLAINEN of Finland 9-0, and will wrestle for European gold for the first time in his career. His previous highest finish came in 2017 when he finished with a bronze medal.
