Frank Chamizo: “Difficult to take Olympic postponement, I went paranoid. One has to change everything, 1 year is too much”

By   - 02/04/2020

Frank Chamizo won the fourth continental gold medal at the wrestling European Championships held in Ostia (in the -74 kg freestyle) last February. The win at the European Championships perched Chamizo of Italy as world number 1 wrestler in the highly competitive 74kg category. Chamizo overthrew two time world champion Zaurbek SIDAKOV of Russia for the No. 1 spot in the latest rankings.

The showman of the world wrestling was all geared up for the Tokyo event, but Chamizo claims, the postponement of the Olympic Games to July 2021 has completely made his paranoid and all his hard work of last 4 years have gone for toss.” When I received the news from my manager I went into paranoia. I was so upset. A year is a lot. I don’t know how to face, reach to such a situation, a year to the Olympic Games is too much. You have to change your diet and your state of mind. It is extremely hard for me, it won’t be easy.

Over the last 25 years, Russia and America have had a stronghold on the 74kg weight class –winning a combined 22/25 world or Olympic titles. But Chamizo was tipped to change all of that in Tokyo. The Italian champion was expected to improve his Rio Olympic bronze medal to an Olympic gold. He’s been extremely vocal in his quest to lock up the No. 1 seed at the Olympic Games. Immediately after winning gold at the European Championships, Chazmio had said, “I’m wrestling in Poland. It’s a Ranking Series tournament and I want to come into (the Olympic Games) ranked No. 1.”

But now Chamizo like others will have to wait little longer to realize his Olympic dream. And according to Chamizo himself peaking and preparing for the Olympics 2021 won’t be easy.
