Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has released the list of women wrestlers who will be called for the training camp for the Tokyo Games after the lockdown resumes on May 3. It has included 15 wrestlers in five Olympic weight classes – 50kg, 53kg, 57kg, 62kg, and 68kg. They have excluded the 76kg weight class as they believe that India has a better chance to qualify for the Olympics in the other five categories.
Each weight division will have the top three wrestlers who will attend the camp. The date for the camp, however, is yet to be decided. There is a high possibility that the training camp might be moved out as Lucknow has become a hotspot for coronavirus cases.
Out of the 15 women wrestlers, only Vinesh Phogat has qualified for the Tokyo Games in 53kg. India will bid their chances for the remaining five categories next year at the Asian and World Olympics Qualifiers.
