The Indian wrestling team hopefuls will go through the trials on Friday to book their places for the Asian Olympic Qualifiers and Asian Wrestling Championships. As is the norm, the entire headlines on the trials are focussed on the freestyle team-spots with little talk about the poor cousin in India, the Greco-Roman form of wrestling. Unlike, Men’s Freestyle where only 3 Olympic qualification spots are for grab, the Friday trials will offer 6 spots for Greco-Roman wrestlers where the contenders will battle for the following categories –
Olympic Weight Categories
60kg
67kg
77kg
87kg
97kg
130kg

Battle Royale – Gurpreet vs Sajan in 77kg
Without any doubt, the headline battle in the Greco-Roman category would be between the current national champion Gurpreet Singh and 3 time world age group medallist Sajan in the 77kg. No other category offer such quality match-up. Gurpreet defeated Sajan at the national wrestling Jalandhar in a ill-tampered and a close bout. The Greco-Roman prodigy Sajan will look for revenge on Friday. On stake will be place in the Qualifiers as well as the Asian Championships in India.
Harpeet Singh moves up to 87kg from 82kg – to challenge Sunil
Another interesting battle in the offing would be between two current national champions. One won a gold at the 87kg and another one at 82kg. The 82kg Indian champion Harpreet Singh has decided to move up to 87kg as 82 is a non-olympic category.
“I have decided to move up to 87kg. Olympics is once a lifetime opportunity and I don’t want to let that pass. I will try my best against Sunil and others and will try to qualify” said current Asian Championship Silver medallist Harpreet to WrestlingTV.
Sunil is not only the national champion but also represented India @ the world championships in 87kg and will be a tough nut to crack for Harpeet.
