Four years is a long time in sport and no one is learning this better than Sakshi Malik. 4 years back she was darling of the entire nation as she won the Rio Olympics Silver medal and 4 years down the line she is struggling to make her presence felt in the Indian wrestling eco-system. She will once again be on test on Sunday when she fights for a place in the Indian wrestling team for the Asian Championships, this time in the non-olympic category of 65kg.
65 KG – SAKSHI MALIK vs NISHA vs NAVJOT
18 year old Sonam shocked Sakshi Malik last week to qualify in 62kg category to qualify for the Asian Olympic Qualifiers, Ranking Series event in Rome and Asian Wrestling Championship in Delhi. The place for the Olympic Qualifier is already lost but after the debacle in the trials the Rio Olympic medallist Sakshi will now be in action in the 65kg category.
“Yes I will be contesting in 65kg. I cant be sitting ideally and will attempt a comeback to the Indian team by playing in 65kg. I will give my best in the trials”, said the 2019 national winner in 62kg over phone to WrestlingTV.
As Sakshi moves to 65kg, she will have to battle out with some of her close friends for a place in the Indian team. Sakshi’s biggest test will be against 2018 Asian Wrestling Champion Navjot. Like Sakshi, Navjot is also having average season this year as she lost her national crown to Nisha at the Jalandhar nationals.
Nisha, the national champion in the 65kg category is another big hurdle which Sakshi has to encounter at the trials not only physically but emotionally as well. Nisha was on her sidelines during the first trials and the girl from Haryana is mentored by Sakshi herself. Now for the first time ever they may come across as opponents.
